Video call interview tips

I've got an interview coming up next week and it's over a video call. A little apprehensive about how different it will be to a normal interview. Has anyone had an interview moved online during covid and have you got any tips? Also do you make as much of an effort with your outfit?

Definitely dress as if you were meeting in person
Clear background, no interruptions
Test the delay time with a few short questions so you are not talking over each other
Is it a panel, or one on one?
Have you got to present via sharing screens?

Definitely still dress for the interview, including wearing shoes, so your mind is in work mode. Have plenty of water on hand in case your mouth gets dry. If you're using a call system that you're not familiar with then do a test call with someone else first. Have the screen at face height. If you're using a small laptop you'll likely be looking down at the lower screen, this will squash your chest and compress your voice a bit. Raising a screen to face height means you can sit up straight and look fresh and sound confident. When I do screen presentations (similar to interviews for nerves level!) I set my screen so that I can stand up, it makes me feel more confident if I'm standing, no idea why! Good luck!

I had one. I dressed for a normal interview but didn't wear shoes.

I prepped as normal.

I spoke more slowly and left gaps after they spoke in case they were delays.

Mine was on a phone! Which was hard. But it was fine really. Luckily no presentation.

Sit at a table and dress as if the interview was in person.

Write up some notes for yourself and tape them to the side of your screen.

Definitely dress the part and hair, make up (if you wear it).

I have had an in person interview in December and a Zoom interview last month. I found the zoom easier as I could have my notes on hand and write details down for the scenarios they gave me.

The job I got was essentially a committee clerk (NOT Handforth 😂 ) so writing things down whilst listening then repeating it back was taken as a positive).

Water on hand to play for time by sipping whilst you process the question and as others have said practice with someone beforehand on the platform the interview is on to make sure it all works and you’re happy with how things look and work.

Good luck - hope it all goes well for you.

I've had a couple and preferred them, I found I felt a lot more confident because I was comfortable with being at home. I dressed as though I was actually going to the interview and I had notes on the wall in front of me, I didn't use them but I just felt better knowing they were there. Make sure you log on early so you can check your background and angles. Good luck!
