Returning to work after long term sickness

I recently returned to work after been off work for 12 months. In the time I was off a lot changed obviously with Covid but also new staff, new manager and a whole new computer system.
I am finding it really difficult at the moment, I don't feel like part of the team anymore and I feel as if my manager thinks I'm just a burden to the company with my illness.

That sounds really tough. Bless you. Have a chat with your manager and see what extra support you can have - you should really have a buddy to help you settle in after such a long time away. Don’t be worried about asking for some more support.

I really feel for you, that’s so tough. Those feelings are completely natural of course, but your line manager/org should be helping. For example

  • staggered return
  • flexible house
  • a buddy
  • time for training and development
Basically they should treat you as a new employee and then some. It’s hard to ‘demand’ more when you feel like you’re being a burden, but it’s possibly the only way you’ll be able to get back feeling like you’re making a real contribution.

@MirandaWestsNewBFF that’s the problem I have lost a lot of confidence and I feel so anxious about speaking to my manager.

I know it probably sounds silly but I feel like my manager has made her opinion about me by my illness and from speaking to other staff and not by getting to know me and how I work if that makes sense.

I get you, but your manager can’t help you if they don’t realise how much you’re struggling. Would it be easier to write it in an email and request a meeting ti discuss it? It is literally your manager’s job to help you xx

I just don’t want her to think I’m weak and not capable of doing my job 😢
