Working from home in pharmaceutical companies?

I'm starting a new job in a big pharma, in january. I'll be working as a registration officer, in regulatory affairs. Is anyone with a similar job allowed to work from home one day of the week, for example? I have a longhish commute and it would make my life so much easier....

Also, what happens when you have a doctor's appointment or your child is ill? I've only worked in academia before where all is flexible so I'm a bit worried about these things!

I don't know specifically but I know certain pharma companies are very family friendly and good about flexible working hours (e.g. AZ).

My friend works in regulatory affairs but she is at the MHRA - she works a day or two at home I think.

To be honest, this is something you'd have to ask the specific employer I'd imagine.

Thanks Elphaba, knowing that your friend does it has given me some hope. I'm just so worried about the commute and the fact that I'll have less time to spend with dd.... being able to work one day a week from home would make a huge difference!

I think I'll leave these questions to my employer until the end of my probation period !

Thanks grumpyfrumpy, I'm encouraged by that. I'll definitely wait a few months until I start making demands though!
