Civil service - is salary negotiable?

Hi,

I've been offered a new role and on the conditional offer it says salary £ (amount bottom of the band) TBC

I didn't discuss salary at interview and the amount on the letter as described above is at the bottom of the band. Is it worth trying to negotiate for a little more money? I'm an external candidate and new to civil service so clueless on protocol. Any tips/advice would be great, thanks.

Absolutely. Give reasons though, length of service in previous similar role, benchmark against similar private sector for example. Don’t forget to factor in if you are getting more flexibility about hours, additional leave or a pension that you might not get in private sector.

Something like my expectation given my previous experience was more x than y. Or I’d expect my previous experience to be recognised by being appointed at x point of scale.

My dh negotiated on holidays too in his CS role.
