Holiday requests

Every January at my work we put our holiday requests in for the next financial year. It's a first come first serve basis. I found out today that my colleagues have requested all their holidays and they have been approved and I haven't put mine in yet as I am shielding. I feel so annoyed because I wasn't asked for my request and now all the school holidays will be taken.

Why didn’t you email the holiday request?

@AlwaysCheddar

Why didn’t you email the holiday request?
Sorry should have said in my OP we usually request at the end of January but they put the requests in end of December. I was going to email mine at the end of January.

Shielding only came back in a couple of days before Xmas. Surely you knew you’d need to get it sorted soon?

Be flexible, but if you can’t have any of the dates you want raise a grievance. The process could well be deemed unfair.

I think it sounds like a case of you snooze you lose, sorry OP.

What date does the holiday policy say requests will be accepted from?

we don't have a policy of when it has to be in, but for the past 10 years it has always been end of Jan.

You could have submitted still surely by email?

Ok so nothing in writing, just convention. And when everyone else was putting theirs in why was it you didn’t know that was happening? Were they all in the office and you at home shielding ?

If that’s the case I can see how that can happen. People chatting, someone says to manager can I put in my holiday. Everyone else then piles on with theirs.

Manager should have said no, or told you as well. And a chaotic first come first served policy without a fixed date is not sensible.

I assume you’ve put yours in now, but if you can’t get reasonable dates you could consider a grievance. Particularly if the reason you missed out is because you weren’t there because you were shielding and the reason you were shielding is a disability.
