Role & job title changed just like that... can they do that?

Hi All,

Firstly, I’m very great full to have a job right now as this has been a hard year for every one around the World.

Back story is I was hired from temp to perm after a year as my manager was really happy with my work. Currently on probation period and have three months left. Had my review which went really well.
All of a sudden the company is restructuring and my role and job title has changed completely without consultation. I have been told I’ll be doing a new job with a new job title- from admin to front of house.

Should there be a consultation period or not as I’m still on probation?

Is it a temporary change or permanent one? If it's a permanent one then yes, they should have consulted with you.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, it’s a permanent change.

It all seems to be going ahead without consultation. I don’t want to rock the boat too much as I know how hard the job market is right now.

Do you not want to do the new role?

If they're restructuring, they're trying their damnedest to survive the current circumstances.

Technically for change of role, if more than 50% has changed then it should be done differently. Assuming that you have a specific role on the contract and not a generic coverall title, you have a decision to make. Rock the boat and be redundant with a week's notice and no pay as you've under 2 years service. Or accept the new role. Thankful for the job and if necessary look for alternatives. Sadly you've no real protection being on probation and with less than 2 years service.

The role I currently do is varied, which I really enjoy. I’m just not sure if I’ll enjoy the new role but I guess I won’t know until I try itSmile

From my conversations with my line manager they are trying to keep the business afloat and keep on as many people as possible.

As mentioned, I’m really grateful to still have a job and lucky to be given an alternative role in the current climate.

I won’t rock the boat and will certainly give the new role 110%.
Who knows I may really enjoy it!

Thank you all for your feedback. It’s very much appreciated.
