Building an NHS admin manager career

Hi All
Has anyone here worked their way up the admin ladder into a management role?
I'm currently in the process of doing this, it's been hard going at times as there's not always the opportunities arising. Just about to start a secondment which will be a challenge, but lots of great experience and if I can prove myself, it may just open some more doors along the way.
Could really benefit from some words of wisdom from those familiar with NHS structures (or similar).

Not personally as I have a different sorry of role in an NHS office, bit from what I've observed in others:

  • Be excellent at your job
  • Volunteer judiciously for internal groups, committees, short cross-organisational projects to give you useful experience beyond your main role
  • Look out for temporary promotions e.g. mat leave cover

Also after a point I think it's helpful to have a degree, if you don't already, and then potentially one of those NHS leadership masters courses. Do as much training as you can: project management, excel, word, leadership, management anything and everything.

Agree with PP that you should join cross organisational groups and represent your team as much as you can.

Thank so much for the responses.
I'm a graduate and have committed to lots of training as suggested in your posts. Hopefully this will help me along the way.

Talk to your senior management team about what your ambitions are - ask for every opportunity you can even if outside your remit to get that experience. It can definitely be done
