Miscarriage and sick leave

I sadly had a miscarriage on Monday and self certified last week at work. I'm going to see how I feel this Monday but as I'm due back in hospital to monitor me (concerns over the miscarriage) I'm unlikely to feel up to work next week.
I'm worried this will go against me at work as I've recently returned from being off sick (stress) and because it's two periods of sickness in a short period I'm worried I'll be called in for a sickness review meeting. Does anyone have experience of this or where it says bc this is pregnancy related it shouldn't count towards my sickness record?

In my area of work (nhs) any leave related to pregnancy is not included in 'sick leave'. I had time off for a mc and it was not recorded in the same way as sick leave. Basically if it was related to pregnancy it's free leave. I'm not sure if this is the case across the board though.

I believe you are "protected" in an employment sense until your tests are BFNs which can take a couple of weeks after a miscarriage but it really depends how far along you were?

I've had 5 miscarriages between 7 and 12 weeks and some were over quick others not. I always went straight back to work though even during monitoring as that's what my mental health needed and appreciate that isn't the same for everyone

Your employer needs to know this circumstances of your self certification as if they don't know then yes they could discipline you for two absences but they really do need the full facts

Thank you for the replies. My manager is aware and has been kind (so far). Worried it's more innocent ignorance (they're not great at knowing what's right etc in these circumstances) and will follow the procedure that will trigger a sickness review but if I'm Clearer on where I stand I can push back

This is pregnancy related, however, how long after they give will be workplace dependent if your sick note does not say pregnancy related. If it states pregnancy related it's all covered and cannot be used with your other sickness absence against you.

Pregnancy related can't be used in sickness reviews, it is protected.

My first early miscarriages I was fine after about a week, but when I had a 13 week miscarriage I was off work for a long time. About a month prior to miscarriage as I initially had a threatened miscarriage but baby still ok but I was a wreck. Then when I did miscarry I had lots of complications and was very traumatised, I was off for 6 weeks and then phased return for 4 weeks.

None of that counted against me as it was all recorded as pregnancy related.

If you need to get sick notes you can ask your GP to ensure they write issues relating to miscarriage.

An employer would be very foolish and unkind to count that towards any absence procedures.

So sorry. I've been through this too. As others have said 'pregnancy related' is often protected and would not be counted as sick leave for the purpose of attendance monitoring. Do you have a HR dept? Might be best to speak directly to them as I'm sure they will confirm this and give direction to your manager to record the absence appropriately xx
