Applying for a temporary job - is this appropriate?

I am applying to work in one of the COVID-19 testing labs. The role is temporary (6 months) although nobody knows the situation so maybe it will get extended, I'm not sure.

I am a recent biology graduate but I am more interested in a career in research in a different field (cardiovascular disease) rather than working in a clinical laboratory. However, I think it would be good experience to broaden my laboratory experience and give me insight into the clinical applications of biology. I am also passionate about helping during the pandemic as well.

To apply, I have to write a long statement about my interest and suitability. Should I mention all of the above given that it is a temporary position or will the fact it is not directly related to my overall career goal hinder my application?

My team are supporting on this testing (in a different way) and we’ve been advertising 3-6 month jobs.

Anyone demonstrating a link to their degree or any prior experience, plus showing a want to “do their bit” is automatically getting a screening call. It shows that you have thought about your transferable skills.

You should only write about why you are suitable for the position you're applying for and positive points only. Of course you don't tell them it's not your real interest.

How long a statement have they asked for?

I wouldn't use the phrase "I'm more interested in. . ." but I see no harm in mentioning your long term goals and saying you'd like to broaden your lab experience. This is fine for a temp role.

Just be sure to mention what skills you can bring too, not just what you want to get out of it.
