Furlough and redundancy question

MiaMarshmallows · 12/11/2020 11:33

I got made redundant very out of the blue and upsetting.
Anyway, this was in September and done all the consultation period and now waiting on the redundancy money.
My friend said that I am still entitled to furlough money even though I have been made redundant? I have never heard of this and can't see that being right at all. Can anyone shed any light?

No-one is "entitled" to furlough. An employer can choose to furlough a member of staff but they then still have to pay out pension contributions and employer NI plus during September & October the employer had to contribute 10% (Sept) and 20% (Oct) of the employees wages and many firms could not afford to do that so made employees redundant instead.

Under the new furlough scheme (that started 1st November) where the employer does not have to contribute to wages, only NI/pension an employer can choose, if they like, to re-employ someone they previously made redundant but there is no obligation to do so.

Well I don't have a job to go back to at all so not sure why my friend was so adamant that I would be getting furlough

It's worth noting that until 2nd lockdown was announced and everything changed, the scheme that had been due to start on 1st November specifically stated that it couldn't be used for anyone on notice of redundancy.

Which would include me. Wish people like my friend would stop spreading misinformation. She's been telling everyone who has been made redundant the same thing.

Martin Lewis issues advice on peoples rights with regards to furlough. Except it’s not always accurate and doesn’t take into account lots of things.

MiaMarshmallows · 12/11/2020 23:00

I see. Thanks for clarifying

“been” not “even” sorry.

Martin Lewis spends a lot of time convincing people they are entitled to be furloughed and spouting off nonsense about employment law he knows nothing about!

In lockdown 1 we did allow one person to come back and ho onto furlough as per the government rules as a gesture of goodwill but as soon as we had to start paying out and not be able to reclaim the full amount it ended but she did get a good few months pay (she had left in the feb as covid hit) at the time here were several other people made redundant. Only this one asked if we would consider it and as she was a great employee we agreed
So your friend was right it was possible however it was employers discretion and I can’t see any employer bring prepared to be out of pocket for someone

Shred what pp say about Martin Lewis, he caused us loads of issues in the summer saying x y z when the government were saying a b c
He often shares tumours as fact
