I have to sack someone

I have to sack someone this week and I'm freaking out about it. It's wholly deserved, and this person's only worked for us for 8 months and hasn't been pulling their weight since day 1. I just feel awful though - this is the first time I've had to do this and with the 2nd lockdown kicking in this week I feel just awful. Hardly slept this weekend and just feel horrible that I'll be the person responsible for this person being out of a job. Anyone any words of wisdom to impart? Feel horrendous Sad

It's arranged for Thursday, so got to prolong the torture until then Sad I had a pre-meet to go over the reasons for the meeting being required. Some HR processes really seem overly drawn out and cruel when they're at this stage, which I'll be raising after this is over. There was little reaction from employee in this meeting tbh so who knows how they'll react. I'm finding it horrible - when I first got offered management level I looked forward to the mentoring, training and progressing side... now kicking myself for being so naive! Hopefully these instances will be few and far between in any case, I really don't want to repeat this anytime soon.

Oh no that is horrible . Put yourself a nice bottle of prosecco or something in the fridge for the weekend and have that to look forward to x

Management definitely sucks sometimes. But it will be better in the long run if you terminate their contract now.

Whatever happens, don't apologise for having to do it, however bad you feel.

How did it go OP?

GoneScone · 12/11/2020 21:27

Horrible, I'm feeling awful now. But also reassured it was the right thing for both the business and employee.... Hopefully it's a very long time before I have to do that again!

Good work, op. One thing that always helps me in these situations is to remember that i am being paid to do my job and if i don't do the sacking then I'm not doing my job properly and if me being too scared to do it / try to avoid it means that then fuck that shit. I'm not going to let that person make it look like i can't do my job just because they can't do theirs. Quite literally i have to step through that thought process every single time before i do one. I hate that part of my job but it has to be done.

Well done OP - hope this week is better xx
