Travel expenses for office visits

I am currently looking at an interesting civil service job which is offered both in Birmingham and London. If based in Birmingham, one is expected to visit the London office twice a week. That is a lot of travelling on very expensive trains. My questions is if this bi-weekly commute is likely to be reimbursed?

Hi if your home office base is Birmingham you cover the cost of getting to the Birmingham office but the employer pays the train fares to London. You would also get an allowance towards cost of lunch etc (subsistence) each day you were in London.

You must ask, sometimes these things need to be negotiated. However I suspect they have something in place foe the London travel as it's a big distance difference and would be very costly

This is part of what we do anyway. You have an office base and you can claim expenses from that base to elsewhere. We don't encourage claim for lunches (although I think HMRC allow it) because our staff would buy them anyway so no difference in their costs and it feels like taking the piss a bit...if they were in some way prevented from making their own lunch because of location and they usually did - we'd happily refund them.

I'm a civil servant and yes, travel between base and other locations is covered. Exactly as a pp says about lunch, we're allowed to claim it but I don't as I'd buy lunch anyway.
