Term time only - pay

Hi

Before I go and ask my new employer ( and make myself look stupid!) does anyone know how pre schools normally pay their staff?

To clarify I'm a temp - until Christmas, and I don't yet have a contract ( I'm hoping my employer will extend my contract and that might be why I don't have a contract yet..)

I was told my hourly rate before I started - wasn't the best but was happy with it. I expected this to be paid for the days I do (plus maybe a few weeks holiday?)

However I've been paid more, and it calculates that I'm being paid for 52 weeks of the year- the last two months have been the same payment ( apart from a bit of OT)

Does this sound right for a term time only job? It probably explains why my hourly rate is lower than I would have expected.

It's quite common in education for people to work term time only but have their salary split evenly over the 52 weeks a year so they get paid even whilst not working (it's actually how teachers are paid)

Thanks @Comefromaway , this is what I was thinking. The hourly rate threw me as I then calculated my wage based on that and the hours I worked ( so not including half term). Bonus really!

It's possible that during this term you will have five days holiday, so that covered the half term. Which is why you were paid the full amount over the half term. It's when they take into account all the school holidays and pro-rata based on that your monthly salary drops.

Depending on length of service you will get around 30 days holiday per year.

Which is about 2.5 days per month. Do half term covered as it's a terms contract

@Movinghouse2015 - but I've been paid more than I'd expect this month - if you calculate what I've worked inc half term based on the hourly rate i was told?

I was told I'd be paid £8.85ph but it's closer to £10.50 which is a big difference

Last month I got the same - even though the summer holidays took up the first week of sept.

I think I'm going to ask for clarity. I don't want them to come back when I've finished asking for money back!

I would definitely ask them to check your pay/contract. You could end up owing then money.

Not sure if this helps but I am on a 17.5 hours a week contract, term time (38 weeks) plus 2 weeks.

On top of that I get the same statutory holiday allowance that everyone gets - so 28 days or 5.6 weeks.

So my salary is £10 per hour x 17.5 hours
x 45.6 weeks
divided by 12 equal payments

It could be 8.85ph plus holiday pay which would be around £1.05 per hour? This is how we pay temps at work.

If you haven't worked much this year then your earnings could all be tax free plus very low NI contribution if you aren't working many hours either?

This could be a possibility! I only work 13.5 hrs a week so not enough to pay tax or NI
