Self certificate question

I wondered if anyone could help me.

I have to have an operation next week and be off work approx 3 weeks. I'll get paid for 2 weeks but a 3rd week would be SSP.

I've been told I have to self certificate for the first 7 days and fill in the SC form and then the surgeon will give me a fit note.

I then hand them to my employer who send them to payroll.
Is this correct?

Sorry if its such a stupid question I've never had to do this before.

In practice, your surgeon will probably just give you a fit note for 3 weeks from the operation if that's the required recovery period, so you probably won't need to faff around self certifying for the first week and can just send the fit note in to your employer.

Thank you I thought that might happen. Then someone mentioned self certification and I got confused.
