Asked to leave, now saying I’ve resigned

Can anyone advise if I’ve shot myself in the foot here? Employed as their nanny for 5 years, last week they told me verbally they want me to leave due to the job not being the same and me not wanting to do some things (that a nanny housekeeper would). I asked if I was being redundant and they said no, they’re ‘terminating my employment’ and they’re allowed to. They asked me to leave anytime up until March. The day of this and the day after were very unpleasant and I no longer felt I could stay in the job and house (I live with them), I so I told them in an email that I would leave in 6 weeks, the minimum notice period we have.

After talking to ACAS I now believe they haven’t followed correct procedure for dismissing me or making me redundant. But have I ruined things for myself by sending the email saying I’ll work only my 6 weeks notice then go? I think I’ve been really foolish.

In your email did you refer to the conversation or to anything they said to you?

They haven't followed the correct procedure but you need to consider what you want to get out of this.

They effectively gave you 6 months notice and you went back and so no I'll do 6 weeks.

What outcome are you looking for?

Based on what you have said and assuming that what you refused to do would not count as any reasonable request, then I would say there were no fair grounds for them to “terminate your employment” other than via a redundancy.

But unfortunately yes, I do think there is a possibility you have turned this into a resignation with your letter. What did you say in the letter? Did you refer to them terminating the employment or did you in any other way reference the conversation you had had with them?
