career advice for a friend looking to move into government from outside government work

This is more a question for a friend rather than me - I've got a job on a contract which is likely to go permanent soon.

I've got a friend who is trilingual in French, English and Spanish - she has worked using her French and English in the UK for a few years and currently works for a hedge fund company as an office manager/PA but has been on furlough since lock-down/pandemic started and she told me recently that she's been the only person put on furlough and is expected to start back to work in November.

However, she's also told me that much of her work she did beforehand which was booking travel and meetings for journeys and meetings which happened abroad (Europe and USA and rest of world) has all but finished as her colleague now don't travel and have meetings abroad and if they do its via Zoom/Teams etc. She told me she was a bit worried about this because if this carries on this means that this is a big part of her role and what else could she do?

She's been there for 5 years but her bosses she's told me are a bit rude, sexist etc and she'd like to leave.

I've been in my role about 8 months but was recently told I have a very good chance of getting a permanent role here when PA roles are advertised in January (my role and one other as well as other PA roles) and this is in the civil service but in a niche part of it. I'm an Executive Officer but could progress to a Higher Executive Officer and in fact maybe even Business Manager (I think that's the term), my friend could certainly do the latter role. Part of my reason for doing this now (I always worked outside government in non government companies apart from contract temping roles for a few years) e.g. applying for permanent government roles is job security for the next few years but I'm unsure whether I'd want to stay longer and could probably easily get a job outside government then.

My friend has expressed an interest in this and has asked me to find out more - but does anyone have any advice on this? She's keen to find out about benefits like WFH etc but I don't know where her languages would be useful in government.

So - work mumsnetters - any advice I can give her? We will be meeting for a coffee next week all being well.
