How do I get a P60?

Have just got a new job and they are asking for one. I have not worked for 4 years and left my previous job through ill health. before that i was self employed for 8 years.
I don't even have a P45.I I have never been given a P60. Should i just phone the tax office? i am not quite sure what a p60 is.

You can fill in a P46 with your new employer rather then P45. Then contact the Inland Revenue about your P60 - itcontains your year end earnings

Why do they want a P60? That's the annual statement of your earnings for the whole year.

Thanks it has been so long since I've worked I think my brain has gone to mush. I guess my previous employer should have sent it to me with my final paycheck then. Not surprised they didn't bother, as they were totally hopeless

annual statement of earnings for the whole year would be £00.00 zilch. For the last year I worked (2003) i should have got one -right?
