I’m about to apply for a job and seen that I have a personal connection to the manager/interviewer, (they are the best friend of my late father who they also worked along side my father died many years ago and we have lost contact with this person) would you make a subtle hint to this connection in your covering letter? As to them it may not be obvious at first due to my married name they would not no or would you leave it in the hope you would be invited to an interview.

That is not something I would do, no.

I’d leave it out

Leave it out. Not sure how you could make a subtle hint.

Don’t mention it. I hate when I see this in applications - it can come across as desperate / that you believe the organisation to be nepotistic (which I know isn’t your aim!)

If you have an interview and are in contact with someone managing the process, I would send them a message to let them know as there may be a potential conflict of interest. Your family friend may wish to excuse themself on this basis. That would be the only reason for you to bring this up.

Thank you everyone
Definitely don’t want any conflict of interest or to look desperate . It won’t be mentioned haha thank you and have a lovely weekend xx

I would definitely mention it. Not in a subtle way hoping it would help, but in a very clear, 'I want to avoid conflict of interest' way.
Otherwise the manager would be taken by surprise when you walk into the interview and will wonder why you hadn't said anything, and it would put them in an uncomfortable position.
