How to ask university lecturers for job references?

I finished university last year and I now want to start applying to some jobs in my field.

The thing is there are two categories of things I am applying to: master's courses and research assistant positions. For some reason I am having a mind blank when trying to compose the email as asking for two different types of references sounds a bit cheeky and I know that they will be busy trying to deal with the start of term so I am definitely over-thinking my wording...

Would something like the following be ok:

I am currently planning on starting to apply for a master's in X field as well as research assistant positions and was wondering if you would be a reference?

That's fine OP. It's perfectly ok to apply for more than one type of position and not cheeky at all.

It is fine (I’m a lecturer). I appreciate it if the student makes it easy by sending a copy of their cv and application - it is hard to remember students’ achievements - especially if it is a few years since I have taught them.
