How do I quit my job?

I'm just a waitress in a small independent. Been there almost 4 years. No contract. Part time. So it's not like a huge formal business.

I rarely see my boss in person. Can I email her? Or should I give her an actual letter??

I feel like an idiot and I'm overthinking it but I've never actually quit a job before. I want to leave on good terms but it's not a nice place to work so I need to do it as soon as possible.

Just email saying you are handing in your notice, the date you want to be your last day at work and requesting a breakdown of any remaining annual leave owed to you.

If you've no contract you can just email to say you won't be back.

If you don't see her routinely, send her an email. It's the same as a letter. Tell her when you plan to leave - I'd give at least a few weeks notice. Thank her for the opportunity to have worked there. Ask for confirmation that she's received it and of any necessary stuff like final payments etc. Then it's up to her to get in touch with you.

If it's informal work arrangement and you aren't happy there, she may respond badly and you could find yourself out of work much quicker etc. So I'd be tempted to only send the email immediately after your most recent pay cheque or whatever. But I'm cynical that way.

@Justmuddlingalong That's wrong. Quitting does have a contract, albeit not in writing. That means statutory notice applies, which after three full years would be three weeks. You can mutually agree to leave at an earlier time.

If it was cash in hand and no contract, I'm not sure the legality of the job should all of a sudden be important.

It's not a cash in hand job? I get paid twice a month via my bank, it's all done correctly? I've just never signed any sort of contract or agreement, I have no formal documents like that and I keep copies of everything.

I had planned to have my last day be 5th October, which I think is sufficient notice. I couldn't stick it out much longer than that. My boss is decent to work for but time and time again she has chosen the disgusting bully/sexual harrasser over everyone else.

I won't put anything about that in my email obviously. So far I just have that this is my formal notice, my last day is this day, happy to help with training, thanks for the opportunity.
