Notice Period & Holiday Pat

My son is leaving his work place, he hates it, his boss is a bully and it's taking its toll on his MH.

His contracts states 3 months notice. He also has 8 days of holiday to take.

If he doesn't take his holiday during the 3 months notice period, will it be paid at the end? Eg he will 'work' 3 months & 8 days?
He will then be slightly better off (as he has no new job to go to) and I guess he is free to start a new job during his 'holiday' period?

It's probably a simple problem, but I've never moved jobs with holiday pay being owed.

Yes. But his employer might require him to take those 8 days during his notice period, in which case he wouldn’t get them paid on top.

So it's just depends on the employer?
What is usual?
Thanks

There is no “usual” really. If they need him at work during those 3 months and him taking holiday would be inconvenient, they’ll pay it out at the end instead.

If they can manage without him for some of his notice period it will obviously save them money if he takes the holiday, so they’ll probably want him to take it.
