Sick leave

I have an upcoming interview and for the first time in my life I will have to disclose a lengthy sick leave for stress. At what point do you disclose this. Does it automatically mean you won't be considered if you are upfront in the interview. I have no intention of not disclosing it but just wondering what is the correct way to go about it.

Hi- didn’t you have to disclose it on the job application form?
It’s not something I would bring up in an interview unless they asked..

Stripyhoglets1 · 23/08/2020 19:40

If they haven't asked you to disclose medical history on the application form then don't disclose it.

YoBeaches · 23/08/2020 19:41

Why do you think you have to disclose it?

Ciderwine · 23/08/2020 20:05

I just assumed that you would need to disclose this as when checking your references this is something that they would look into. I have never been in this situation before so I don't know what the protocol is. My thinking was be upfront and honest rather than get offered the job and then they rescind it after discovering it. There was no question re sick leave on the application

Don't talk about it in the interview! They may ask for your absence record on references and ask about it but not necessarily!

Ciderwine · 23/08/2020 20:20

Ok thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea what the right thing to do was. I just thought I would complicate things if I wasn't upfront.

No it's personal information. Even on checking references companies are only allowed to disclose start date, end date and position held.

Hopefully you are fully recovered- so put it behind you and good luck 💐

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 23/08/2020 20:39

I wouldn't disclose and lots of companies now have a policy of only confirming very basic information in a reference request.

Where I work we just confirm that you worked for us, dates of employment and role. Nothing else.

StealthPolarBear · 23/08/2020 20:40

Of course they're allowed to talk about sick leave!

TheFallenMadonna · 23/08/2020 20:44

You are definitely allowed to give a fuller reference than simply dates and position held. It just has to be true.

BashfulClam · 23/08/2020 22:37

I’ve never been asked in an interview so don’t bring it up unless they ask.

BashfulClam · 23/08/2020 22:38

If it dies cone up you can say you had a period of ill health which is all resolved now.
