contract role - length may have changed

I've been contracting for the past few years, mostly in central government but also in corporate companies. I've been working in central government for 6 months on a 1 year contract, they are now planning a recruitment drive and change and jobs at my level are now being re-advertised at another level and I'm being encouraged to apply - basically PAs/AOs going to EO level. I will apply.

However, I'm slightly concerned, what if I don't get my job I've been doing so far or another job, surely if I've signed up for a year contract that's what it should be right? I possibly wouldn't have accepted the contract if it hadn't been for a year. Have emailed my recruitment agency but no reply as yet.

what would you do?

Is there no provision for early termination in the contract?

flowery - will have to check the contract, I suppose there might be some clause to that effect.

Usually if things don't work out - rare - you just get given a week's notice or you give the same, but this is usually if they are letting you go, for a reason, e.g. misconduct or something, not because they've just changed their mind.

I will have a look at the contract later.
