Redundancy/suitable alternative roles

Hi all,

My employer is restructuring and my whole team is being made redundant. I have not been offered another job in the organisation but there are new jobs in the wider team - do I have to apply for these even though they are not a good match for my current role or are at a lower pay grade? I am worried that if I don't apply for them, I will forfeit my redundancy payout.

Can anyone advise? Thanks in advance.

You’ll have to ask your employer- no one here can tell you what process they are using for internal redeployment/recruitment. If you want one of the jobs you’ll need to at least indicate your interest and ask about the process.

In terms of your redundancy pay, you only forfeit that if your employer offers you a job they think is a suitable alternative, and you unreasonably refuse it. If there are suitable alternatives they feel you should accept and they’d argue it jeopardises your redundancy pay if you refuse, they should make that clear.

But you’ll have to ask them questions about redeployment, vacancies and the impact on your redundancy pay.

Ah ok, thank you - I assumed it was a standard legal protocol they had to follow (thankfully never been made redundant before now so it’s all new to me). I don’t want any of the jobs and am unlikely to be offered a suitable alternative mainly because there aren’t any! I am speaking to HR tomorrow so will clarify things then. Thanks :)
