I want a part-time job

BakedBeeeen · 04/07/2020 09:48

I currently have a 3 days a week professional job. I was full time initially, and then I asked to drop to 3 days a week after maternity leave.
I am now being made redundant, and am starting to look at new jobs. However, all the jobs that I have seen advertised are full time. My question is how do I go about getting a part time job? Would I have to do it full time initially and then try and negotiate part time? Or should I mention that I want part time at interview stage? I would be interested to hear other people’s experience.

Everyone I know in a professional part time job converted it from a full time job
Have you contacted a recruitement abeyance

Have you looked at job share, I work 2 days a week as part if a job share, other person works 3 days. It could be worth contacting an employer to see if they would consider job sharing.

Are you on Facebook? There's a group called "flexible working for people like me". Lots of part time roles posted on there and lots of advice from people who have found flexible roles.

Look on charity job and jobs.ac. Uk

My advice, is to cal the hr contact on the adverts and ask if would consider part-time for the roles. For example, my current role is pt now, but was advertised as ft, so I spoke with them regarding flexible working etc and hey presto, I work pt.

Local councils usually have a good selection of part time jobs, so check their websites. Also many will consider part time even if advertised as full time.

It's always worth asking. I applied for a job a few years ago. It was advertised at part time but open to flexible working. I was offered the job, on the basis that I would do the full time hours while they recruited a job share. This was a university with a flexible working policy.

I've successfully applied for two full-time jobs and asked for part-time at interview. They were areas where they struggle to recruit so were happy to do so (though I get the impression they would prefer fulltime if possible).

In the past I have applied speculatively. Have even tried saying 'you will get my years of experience at a cheaper rate by employing me part-time' (but better written than that!) not that it's got me anywhere...

I do think part time jobs in professional roles are really, really rare tbh! I managed to get the hours I wanted but still full time in my new role, so instead of 9-5.30, I’m doing 8-4 but every day! It does mean I will be home for 4.30 however my children are in breakfast and after school club every day!
