Job Offer / Furlough

Hi. Just after a bit of advice.

Before lockdown I had been offered a new job. I was made redundant in October 2019 and had a bad episode of depression and anxiety pre-interviewing and getting job. Couldn’t start due to lockdown but at this point I hadn’t been made a formal offer, no contract etc. This is a dream job for me, in the right industry, charity supports my personal views etc but I was basically left with no income from March until present. One of those things I understand. I didn’t push for furlough as I was unsure of the legalities surrounding it.

I have now been told I can start on 20th July, and I have a formal offer letter however, they are proposing a staged return with 3 days in office and pro-ratad salary. With the aim to increase to 4 then 5 days.

I haven’t retuned the offer letter yet, but I wanted some advice if I could ask for furlough for the 2 days a week instead of being pro rata and missing out on salary. I understand from August this is a possibility? Can anyone give me advise if this is possible and how to phrase a response?

I’ve taken a pay cut in this job so 3 days a week is going to be challenging. I’m already in a lot of debt due to having to survive on savings (minimal) and dps 80% wages.

Thanks.

you can't qualify for furlough with a new employer, you have to have already been on the payroll before lockdown. I think ex-exployees can be rehired and put straight onto furlough.

I don't think you should suggest this.

Sorry but it’s too late - the furlough scheme is only available now to people who’ve been furloughed before a certain date in June.

I did think that would be the case. Thank you for the advice. Will just plod on the best I can. Thanks.

So sorry if previous post sounded a bit blunt. Can I ask why the staged return - is it because they don’t have the work for you right away?

It might be worth doing a benefits check if you haven’t - just to make sure you’re not missing out on anything you’re entitled to: www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Might also be worth chatting to Citizens Advice as they might have details of any help in your area eg we have some local grants and things you can get. I also wondered if you could look into payment holidays if you haven’t.

I’m so sorry you’re going through such tricky times, I really hope it goes well with starting your job.
