Can’t get a reference - abusive ex employer

Has anyone experienced quitting a job due to abuse but been left without the possibility to obtain a reference? I have no idea what to do about this year of my life on my CV. What everybody thought was a good job was not and was making me afraid. I quit and was immediately told to leave. This left me pretty much homeless for a bit. I don’t want to go into details to protect my identity. Just don’t know how to explain this away to future employers? Currently unemployed although I have two degrees

I used to work in HR and my advice would simply be to tell prospective employers when you get a job offer and they ask for referees. If you're filling in an application then just put two other referees and they can ask you for a more recent one and you can then explain.
