My manager has just sent me my rota for next week. I have told him numerous times what days I can work due to childcare issues, usually rely on GP but obviously can't right now. He just wrote a message saying the rota is done sorry folks nothing can be changed. So if I don't turn up for work one of the days I can't do where do I stand.

It probably depends on the type of contract you have?

It’s harsh but childcare difficulties is not your employer’s concern. It’s affecting a lot of people at the moment so you do have my sympathy. Unless the grandparents are shielding, I would use them if it means losing your job otherwise.

It is a difficult situation to be in but in fairness your childcare issue is not your employer's concern. Maybe once or twice if something crops up such as a sick child an employer can be empathetic but not on an ongoing basis. Especially if there are others who may be in the same position & want to be similarly accommodated, it could make rostering impossible with no-one available some days. Are you being asked to do different hours than you would have done previously or was it always a roster system that was changeable? Can father take a couple of days to look after - use wfh or holiday leave from his job? Or can you swap shifts with colleagues who may have more flexibility? Try to find alternative childcare if you cannot rely on GPs due to contact restrictions. What would you do if GPs were unwell or holidaying, do you otherwise have a plan B such as nursery care...?
