Furlough Advice and Support

Really just looking for some support & advice please.

3.5 weeks ago my boss called me to say that I was being furloughed indefinitely. I work for a small company of 47 employees & 10% of staff have been furloughed, one member from each team. My boss is a bully and very irrational at times.

I was surprised by his call as we had all been WFH and very busy working long hours. No explanation was provided as to why I was chosen over other members of my team and there was no consultation or discussion.

My pay has reduced as they are not making up the 80%. My letter says that I've been furloughed for 3 weeks, however I've not heard anything further from my boss for 3.5 weeks.

Access to work emails has been cut so I can no longer join the weekly team Zoom meetings. I feel completely cut out and isolated.

Having heard nothing I assume that the 3 weeks has been extended. Am I supposed to receive something in writing stating the extension? I have received the initial letter which I signed and returned.

I feel so disappointed by the way I have been treated and increasingly angry. We could have easily rotated.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Katie

Do you have a HR department? Is email them and ask for transparency on how the selection was made and now the 3 weeks is up if there will be any rotation with other staff.

I'd also give your personal email and say you want me to kept updated with any major work changes etc

Thanks for your reply.

Sadly no HR person, just the owner & my boss. He was pretty clueless when he called me, I had to ask all of the questions.

During the call I asked about keeping in touch and he said he would email my personal address to keep me updated. I've heard nothing since & neither have the others who have been furloughed.

Depending on when people return to the office, I will make contact at this point to ask whether I can return......

Ask him what his selection criteria was. Also, you need to agree to be furloughed or else it isn’t legal.
