How to word a request to change my hours

I’d like to be able to drop a day at work from later this year. What’s the best way to word it? The reason I ask is that we asked for parental leave last year so our kids could spend time with elderly family in New Zealand before high school/exams etc Unfortunately, I said that in my request to HR and they took it as us wanting an extended holiday and declined the request.

I don’t want to get my hours request wrong.

I didnt think they could refuse parental leave. They can delay it but not refuse it

Parental leave isn’t something you request- you notify your employer the dates you intend to take, and if it would represent significant disruption they can postpone it. When they misunderstood and refused it, why didn’t you clarify?

Do you have a flexible working policy? That should contain details of what to include.
