Made redundant - reference letter

I've left on fairly good terms with my firm and have asked for a reference from head of department. She's given me one but it is a bit waffly and does not emphasise my skills or performance. She's invited comments and I am minded to address this so that the letter is more balanced in providing a prospective employer with information on these important elements.
I know that some companies do not give more than basic professional references but given that the head has agreed to provide this is it reasonable for me to ask for a statement on my skills etc and more than just personal qualities?
