How do I be a decent, motivating, supportive line manager for 1 colleague? Recent change in reporting lines after working together for many years. I'd love to help them to better enjoy work, to further develop professionally to whatever extent they want (in line with current or anticipated business needs) and to have a good balance between work and home.

They have health issues and are a carer for someone with complex recurring health issues. It's hard to work out what they want and need. They tend to say what they think you want to hear, then talk behind your back.

UK company. Less than 90 staff. Work can be done on business premises or remotely.

What do I do? What do I avoid doing? Be as frank as you need to be to help this work out well.

Thank you in advance for your wisdom.

It sounds like a good company and in general people like flexibility.

Managers I respect are hard working, fair, honest and trustworthy. They trust you to get on with the job and will support you in getting the job done. They lead by example.
