Worried about getting in trouble at work!

I work in education and was working on a word document one evening at work (bored). I don’t know what possessed me to be honest but I wrote the C word on the word document and then deleted it. Not sure why I did it !!

This week in the staff room a poster was put up with a word cloud of in appropriate words that staff have looked up or typed. I don’t feel terrible as there was some other ones which were not me - for example orgasm, hard on, porn etc. But I still feel really embarrassed even though this was anonymous.

No one has mentioned anything other than laughed at the word cloud in the staff room but I know one teacher has access to seeing who searched or typed in what! I saw this teacher today and he didn’t mention anything!

Just a stupid, unexplainable moment but feel worried that I might get in trouble !!!

I understand If most of you who read this don’t understand why - I don’t either but I’m sure we all get moments like this! Hmm

Do you think I’m worrying for nothing? Thanks and please be kind! X

I’ll be honest, that’s just bloody odd that they are able to do that. So, basically if you emailed your husband using the work email then they can read your messages. Just sounds really intrusive

I really wouldn’t stress about it - it’s much more likely someone searched it or sent it in an email than they’ve spotted it in a word doc that you didn’t even save

If it was an issue they’d have pulled you on it - I’d have expected this is a preemptive move to start coming down on people’s inappropriate use of the internet on work kit

How would they be able to tell you had written it on a Word doc if you deleted it straight away? I don't think it's you they 'caught' OP - someone else must have used it in an email.

I don’t think so - when everyone was laughing in the staffroom earlier this teacher said that it monitors emails, word documents, PowerPoint, everything Blush

If you didn't save it I am not sure how they would monitor you typing and deleting a word unless they had a key logger but can't think that they would. Surely the teacher has better things to fill their day with

Thanks all. Maybe I’m over thinking it. X

Do you mean a key logger as someone who has access to all computers?

He did mention this too!!! He’s a bit of an IT whiz

You were writing cant as in I can’t do this or i can’t go on but then you got a grip.

However you are monitoring your stress levels and will let them know 😉

I thought about ‘can’t’ but I seem to remember that it didn’t make sense to what I was previously
writing !!! Confused

One of my responsibilities at work is to receive the alerts when people type stuff. It’s to pick up when teens are searching suicide/guns/porn/self harm etc.

Ours picks up anything being typed on word or email searches that shouldn’t be there - but we only ever pull students up for it. We wouldn’t get an alert for what you typed but could see that you typed the word IYSWI

If anyone asks it was a typo that you deleted straight away.

Very unlikely you're going to get into trouble for typing a word in private then deleting it!

Murrfect or she was studying Lady Chatterly's Lover for her book group and started writing notes on the wrong document Grin

Think they need to make clear how they are monitoring your work and communication though. Invasion of privacy etc

Though if it’s the sort of workplace that thinks it’s ok to be that intrusive I bet loads of people are writing cant in messages....

Also - was wondering whether to sneak in staffroom and take poster down? Or is this risky

Senso monitors internet searches and online communications for violent or extremist or pornographic terms. I don’t think it monitors word docs. But maybe.
Either way the reports it gives are probably aggregated not individualised. If anyone asks just say it was an embarrassing typo.

*online searches not email searches

I just feel embarrassed as I had children’s names on the doc (being a teacher) and don’t want anyone to think I’m calling the children that Shock oh dear. Overthinking !

It was a typo. You put your elbow on the keyboard by mistake.

I would be very unhappy at having every word read by someone like that. What about if you were writing an email to HR?

Report
caulkheaded · 28/02/2020 17:30

There’s no context that comes up, it’s just a sensor on the word.

I’m tempted to say that I left my computer unsupervised so not sure what happened !
