I work part-time 25 hours a week. I used to be zero hours but then when that become discredited (I work for an organisation which should be seen as a good employer and it'S the one that makes the rules) I was offered a contract of what ever hours I wanted. I choose 25 as it maximised my income and holiday entitlement whilst minimising the tax and NI I pay.
I've always be accommodating working away from base, extra hours, days, duties etc.
Recently we have had a new manager one level above my line manager. She's produced a new staff rota, incorporating all the previous spreadsheets, staff where and when, annual leave, staffing requirements. Good in principle but my line manager and others are struggling to use it (they are lacking in ability!).
This has resulted in my issue.
Recently I am only told on a day to day basis when I'm required to work. For example last week, all 3 managers were off on Friday, one on annual leave, one on flexi leave and one just went AWOL! So the rota wasn't done.
I didn't know when I was working this week. It has been custom and practice even when I was on zero hours to let me know on the Friday before when I would be working the next week. I have got to find a way for them to stop doing this. I'm hanging about waiting to find out when I'm working, I can't make plans for anything. So in a way I'm not part-time I'm on call!
To complete the picture, I'm 50p an hour above the minimum wage and 62 years of age, working because I love the job and am good at it. BTW the organisation employ agency staff at twice the cost of permanent staff who are fully employed whilst the part-timers pick up the crumbs.
