Hi there,

Just wanted to pick your brains. I'm currently a medical secretary but I would like to work from home. I don't have enough years experience for Dict8 but I think other companies are more flexible in the years' experience you have to have? What equipment would I need at home and are you actually employed by the company or do you have to register as self-employed and if so what does that entail? Thank you in advance.

I work for dict8 so I only know about them, but all I needed was a compatible foot pedal. I'm self employed.

Oh thanks for getting back to me @Alwayschasingoldenrainbows! Do you manage to get enough work from them and is it a hard process to go self-employed - I wouldn't know where to start!

It's a bit hit and miss to be honest. I also work privately for six consultants who practice at a local private hospital (still home based) so I just use dict8 as a top up when consultants are on holiday etc.
I have 5 or 6 specialties on dict8 so there is almost always lots of work on, but the quality of it is sometimes so poor that I wait for tasks to come on you can actually hear!
Setting up self employed is fairly straight forward, there are lots of good videos on HMRC you can watch. Good luck!

I do a variety of transcription, including medical. All I have is Express Scribe, a pedal and good headphones. It is reasonably easy to get started and the work builds up as the agencies trust you more. Most transcription agencies have basic tests but you should be fine.

Thank you @Horses4! :-) I've been turned down by Dict8 as I've had a career break and they want at least 2 years recent experience which I don't have. Any other medical transcription companies you can recommend?

I work through PageSix and Fingertips, but they're not strictly medical, although we have medical come up from time to time. It's much more broad through. They're both very good to me Smile
