Fixed term contract civil service

Can anybody tell me what their experiences of having a fixed term contact and then securing a perm job in the civil service ? In any department really at executive officer level.

My experience of working in the Civil service is that jobs come out regularly particularly at EO level so a fixed term opportunity can be a good way to get a foot in the door. However, depending how long the job is for and what your personal circumstances are I'm not sure I'd leave a permanent position. Hope this helps
