Some advice please...We are rating our teams on leadership. I have 2 people who have been with me 6 months and one of them was contracting for the first 5months. This person can not understand why their rating isn't 'star performer' and is instead 'early promise. This person seems to be a good manager and has had a couple of pieces of great feedback inc one from ceo but isn't stand out from their peers. They haven't demonstrated leadership, Strategic vision which is fine for now but but thinks trey are stand out. This person hadn't even read the guidance (albeit limited) from HR on the difference between the ratings. Whilst I see potential as a good manager I don't see leadership just yet....how would you manage and feedback?

I’ve got a very similar situation to deal with tomorrow! One of my direct reports has Management responsibility for some of the very junior staff in the team and it’s become apparent that he is a very poor manager and the word leader doesn’t even apply. Slightly different from yours that at least shows some promise! But he thinks he is a star performer when it comes to leadership.

I think the key is being clear on that the expectations are, and relating the score back to that.

What I’ve done is pick out specific examples that I can talk him through. Strategic vision/decision making is one of the biggest issues. What I’m going to do is explain what I mean by strategic decision making and then what I would have expected in those example situations.

Also explaining the difference between a manager and a leader might help them to understand.
