Researching with children

Hello all, might be a silly question, but what sort of jobs involve researching with young children - is it just jobs at universities? Coming to the end of an early childhood degree and at some point would like to move on from working in my current nursery to doing research.

And if it is only really universities, is the usual route to this doing a masters, or can you just work as a researcher?

Thanks.

I have a relative who works as a researcher at a university. She isn’t an academic nor is she studying. She does admin work for the research project. The only issue is she is employed per project....not sure if this is standard but when the project comes to an end her job finishes.
