Smoking breaks

AIBU? I work in a office and don't get regular breaks (lucky if I even get a dinner break most days honestly) management is very strict would rather us eat our dinner sat at the desk continuing to work whilst eating, but that's another story! So some of my co workers smoke and just pop out whenever they fancy for 15 minutes at a time for a smoke break and as we're rarely allowed to leave the office I have decided although I don't smoke to start popping out for 5-10 minutes throughout the day to get some fresh air and stretch my legs. I can see the stares and have had a few comments of 'you don't smoke so why are you heading outside' etc. AIBU popping out for short breaks like the others when I don't smoke?

Personally I would take a lunch break. If asked why I would say 'I'm having one lunch break instead of several smoking breaks. Is there a problem with that?'

Every time I try to take a lunch break it's like I'm guilt shamed for doing it😔 the few times I have left the office for lunch the rest of my shift is unbearable with my manager, we do long shifts and my manager doesn't eat at all so is always tutting if anyone else wants to which is completely unfair which is why It's a lot easier to just grab my food from my desk and sit quietly eating whilst still working.

Who cares if they tut? Just ignore it. You have get used to ignoring passive aggressive people. If they have a problem, they need to say so. Otherwise just style it out. Try it, it's not as hard as you think.

Thank you but I'm used to that I'd rather work just be as easy as possible I was wanting more of a answer of is it unreasonable me taking the same breaks as smokers even thought I don't smoke just to get n escape from the office.

Do you get paid for your break? If so, you’re working for free. I’d let your manager tut.

That aside, YANBU. I can’t stand people who skive off for smoke breaks. Thankfully no one where I work now smokes.

KeepThosePlatesSpinning · 24/01/2020 15:24

I would raise it tbh. Most employers don't allow smoking breaks for this reason, you lose out if you don't smoke.

snowone · 24/01/2020 15:24

You are entitled to a break - it's the law. If you boss chooses not to have a break that is their prerogative and should not be forced upon you.

Take your break - ignore the tuts. If you are in a union seek their advice and if not speak to ACAS.

OP, ask yourself if you really want to work for an employer who would have you work through the entire day with no break, and guilt you into eating lunch at your desk for fear of the huffs and puffs every time you try to step away.

They are treating you unfairly because you don't smoke, while allowing the smokers to have their breaks.

If you want/need a 10 min break mid-morning, a 10 min break mid afternoon, and a 30 min lunch break (less than an hour a day) when you are resting each day. Your manager should not give you a hard time about it, they should be encouraging a healthy workplace.

Are you in a union? If so I would be getting your union rep involved pdq. This is what they're put on earth to sort out, to stop blatant exploitation.

daisychain01 · 24/01/2020 21:39

Or HR presuming your shabby employer bothers to employ people to give a damn about the workforce.

Thank you but I'm used to that I'd rather work just be as easy as possible

Then you can't complain if you won't stand up for yourself Sad

I was wanting more of a answer of is it unreasonable me taking the same breaks as smokers even thought I don't smoke just to get n escape from the office.

It will be taken as poss taking as you have a toxic work environment and an unprofessional manager. If you start doing this as a non smoker, other non smokers will too.
