Any HR people out there ?

My husband went for an interview the Monday before last and they said they would get back to him by the end of last week. He felt the interview went well but he still hasn't heard and when he chases them they are not returning his call.

This is a big London law firm.

Is this normal now for HR not to at least give feedback one way or the other after an interview any more ?

I think your should send a very brief follow up email politely enquiring if they need any more info , that way your Dh does not seem to pushy but gets his name back to the top of the list and reminds them about him .

If they dont get back in touch by the end of the week I would say he has been unlucky .

They're waiting for the preferred candidate to accept (or they're negotiating). They wont decline your dh yet incase their first choice refuses.

Or, HR/hiring manager is absent/on sick leave/holiday.

If he has been unsuccessful surely they would just say. Unless as you say they might be waiting for someone else to accept or decline.

Happens all the time. The norm nowadays. Agree that they are probably waiting on 1st choice to sign paperwork.

He got an email this morning asking if he was available for a phone call this afternoon. He replied back saying yes he was but then no phone call.

If no, why would they not just email him that he has been unsuccessful rather than asking if he is free to talk.

That is very odd. I think he is 2nd choice and 1st choice is messing then around

Sorry have only just seen this. No luck I'm afraid. It would appear as above that he was second choice and they were waiting for someone else to accept.
