I'm self employed and it's likely I may need an operation sometime this year, but I'm a bit confused about what, if any, insurance I need to take out to cover my loss of earnings if I'm off for 6-8weeks. Please can anyone help. I've not had much luck Googling. TIA

I don’t think you’ll be able to get cover.

I have ASU cover (accident, sickness, unemployment) but it won’t cover anything I knew about prior to taking the cover out.

Income protection to cover earnings and maybe mortgage ppi to cover mortgage payments (it's not always a scam!). Definitely worth using an IFA as they'll get paid via commission and find the best deals. Cheapest doesn't always give the best cover.

If you already know you are to have an operation you won't get insurance
The vast majority of companies will not cover you for a known pre-existing condition.

This is something you should have looked in to before you were due an operation. No insurance policy will cover this and it will be very easy to check if you had prior knowledge by looking at your medical records.

OK best get saving up then. Thanks for your advice. I might as well take it out for future reference anyway. Which is the best company for illness insurance?

And I didn't know I was due an op before I ended up in A&E...
