I've been looking for a part-time role for nearly two years and really struggling to make any progress. I used to work in publishing, which simply doesn't offer a lot of part-time roles, and I'm quite keen for a change. But I'm in my mid-forties and up against a lot of younger candidates, I suppose, and candidates with more current skills (I've been SAHM for nine years). I've done a tiny bit of freelance work, but I want to be with other people and away from my kitchen table.
I've applied for publishing jobs that I know I'm qualified for but have not gotten any positive responses. I've applied for entry-level roles in new fields, jobs that I know I could do, and again, nothing. I've looked on Timewise and other flexible working job boards, but it feels more and more like "flexible working" is a myth.
I'm also looking into retraining as well or doing a course, such as the GDL (graduate diploma in law) or something in human resources or operations. Something to build a solid career on, but I feel so removed from the world of work that I don't know exactly what I'd like to be doing and my confidence is really at an all-time low. And if I do a part-time course over two years, I'll be 50 by the time I'm done.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
