Should I join a union and which one?

Should I join a union - would you go for unite or gmb or doesn’t it matter.

I work for a small employer (charity about 30 paid staff). No recognised union as far as I can tell. I would not feel comfortable asking colleagues about their union membership.

I have no issues at work currently but I think it’s best to join as I know that help is limited until you are a member for a while. I did the TUC union finder and cane up with GMB or unite.

Oh another question- If I join a union is it really bad not to strike if called out. I presume unlikely as not recognised union, small employer. I did this once when working in public sector, I had poor MH and was worried about how manager would react. I’m not worried I’m same way with this employer but again would be anxious.
