I want to add a data visualisation string to my bow. Which one would be better?

SAS and other statistical software packages user here...

I've been using PowerBI in my new role and really rate it. My last role could have done with some Tableau skills. I've seen job adverts asking for one or the other so.... flip a coin?!

Flippant but I guess what I trying to say is either (or both...) would be a valuable string to have.

Tableau is produces more beautiful and elegant visualisations but has a licence cost.
Power BI is clunkier but up and coming.
Personally I’d hone my skills with Tableau Public to learn the joys of beautiful dashboards and then add Power BI later.

That’s what I was thinking maidofkent I’m going to flip a coin😂

They both look useful and I just need to pick one!

I don't know much about Tableau, but have just started using Power BI and and thinking it's going to really support my work!

We've just got tableau at work. It can look really good - wasn't as easy to use as I'd hoped but not really played with it.

I think tableau is meant to be better but I think if you just want it on your desktop you can get power BI for free where as tableau is a few hundred quid.

Lunaballoon · 09/01/2020 19:07

Can anyone link to good tutorials on how to use Power BI?

jackstini · 09/01/2020 19:27

Not used BI except via Oracle
Just started using Tableau and I do rate it, very good system

I think I’m going to learn tableau and see how I do 😊

There's loads of stuff if you google. I think there's an online version you can download but you can only use some of their example data maybe.. anyway there is a whole online community where you can view other people's dashboards etc.
