Starting a new job - 17 weeks

I went for an interview a couple of weeks ago and I have been offered the job in writing and I have accepted in writing.

Last week I just found out I'm 16 weeks pregnant, called my new employer today and told them I'm pregnant. I'm suppose to start my job on Monday.

The woman who employed me advised she has to speak to the owners of the company to see if I can still have the job.

Are they allowed to do this? I thought it would come under discrimination but I'm not really sure. Just because I'm pregnant surely they still should be happy to hire me?

Any advice would be very helpful! X

Why did you phone to tell them?

You only had to tell them in about nine weeks time at the latest. At least you could have shown how good a worker you are by then. I don't really know how it will fare now, hopefully they will just go ahead with it.

It’s clearly discrimination if they tell you that you can’t have the job because you’re pregnant. Even if they realise that and take you on I’d be worried that they’d try and find a reason to get rid of you, be wary.
