what's it like to have a *really* long commute?

just wondering if there's anyone out there who has happily moved away from their job but kept it, iyswim - perhaps through a combination of working from home and ludicrous commutes when needs be? is it do-able?

I leave the house every day at 6.30am - the other half does the morning nursery run. I'm then in work at 7.45am, and finish at 4.30pm - which means I can just about make it to the nursery to pick my son up at 6pm. Obviously it's not ideal - but that's they way it is ! Although I do find, I really make the most of the hour and a half I have with the little man before he goes to bed. When I was on maternity leave, I would always be trying to do something else as well as playing with him (cleaning the house, cooking tea etc.) now, he gets my undivided attention for an hour and a half, and everything else either doesn't get done, or I do it after he's gone to bed. Knackering yes, but not that bad really.
