does anyone know how many children over eight a childminder is allowed? what effect does havign older children have on the number of younger children a childminder is allowed?

The National Standards state that any care provided for children over eight must not adversely affect the care of those under eight. In other words it is up to the childminder's profesional judgement bearing in mind his/her home environment/square footage, arrangements for safety when going out, total numbers of children cared for of either age, and whether or not an authorised and police checked assistant is used/employed.
If Ofsted are satisfied that the care of the under eights is not being adversely affected there is no restriction.
