Can I go back and negotiate salary after I've accepted the offer?

My new company asked me to name a figure after I was offered the job verbally. I went for a relatively high figure thinking they would bargain me down but they offered me exactly what I asked for. The figure is pretty much in line with the market average (well the top end) but I've checked the company's salaries on Glassdoor and it seems like they pay well over the market average. I have a lot of years experience but my industry is relatively badly paid (apart from here it seems).

Should I go back and ask for more? Or will this risk messing things up with my new employers? I've not signed anything yet.

I suppose there’s no harm in trying but you’re going to have to come up with a better reason than I was silly not to ask for more money if you want to be treated seriously. You also said you managed to attain the top end of what you wanted so don’t know how this conflicts with the Glass door reviews (which is basically just a website).

As PP said, you’re going to have to come up with a decent reason for revisiting, are you risking future relationship by doing that?
Did you not check / prep for that bit of the process by looking up salaries upfront?

tbh I think you would look like a prat doing so now unless new information on the job has come to light, perhaps from the contract they will sent?

Maybe be happy they usually pay above market value and hope for a good rise after your first, and brilliant, annual appraisal?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think as PP has said I'd look like a bit of a prat if I went back now so I will try to be happy with what I've got (which is a good deal). I think generally I need to stop undervaluing myself!

The job is a fixed term contract. Does that mean I can renegotiate once it ends?

Yes you could renegotiate when it ends

Have they confirmed holidays, pension, bonus, expenses etc yet or could you negotiate on those?

darkandstormydays · 06/10/2019 23:24

Yes, they did when they sent over the formal offer so I don't think I can go back and renegotiate on those either.

I guess I'll just wait a year and ask!
