Always 'first reserve'

I know that it's a nice problem to have but recently when I've applied for posts that are a 'step up', the feedback has been that I'm appointable but unfortunately haven't been successful therefore I'm 'first reserve'.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to know I'm hitting enough of the criteria to be appointable, but does anyone have any advice on what I can do to edge above the other candidates?

Feedback has consistently been that I'm very personable, give good relevant examples of previous experience, come across well and, despite being nervous, this doesn't impact the overall impression. I'm at a loss as to how I go from first reserve to preferred candidate! Help?

I found john Lees' books very helpful in getting the edge. Check out 'the interview expert'.

Thanks Clouds. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. It's just so frustrating so I'm up for anything that'll help!
