Home office promotion salary?

I am currently a civil servant at EO grade and earn £33500. I have applied for a home office HEO role with an advertised salary of £29000-£33500. Does anyone know if I would be placed on the minimum if I was successful or if they would take my current salary into account?

I am going to speak to HR and get a definitive answer but just wondering if anyone had experience of this?

Hi OP. I have been in a similar position some years ago and was allowed to stay on my current salary which was higher than the base rate for the new position.

It's very dependent on the role and the managers though, and in these current times of austerity, you might not be in luck.

To be clear, they "ring fenced" my salary, so I entered the role on the higher salary but didn't get any incremental rises or anything and I wouldn't have done until the others on that grade caught up with my original salary. Hope that makes sense!

You'll usually go over on level transfer between CS depts, unless the max for the new role is lower than your salary.

Is this your actually salary or do you have shift allowance etc added to it?

I think you need to ask your new HR in the event you get it but I have the suspicion that because you are marking time in your current role till the others catch up on you that you won’t be able to take your current salary with you.

Thanks I hope they will consider it! £33500 is my actual salary and then there’s allowances added on. The department I work in now is a bit weird in that the salary bands and jobs are EO but they line up more with HEO roles in other departments.
If it was level transfer I’m sure they would match it but with it technically being a promotion i wasn’t sure.
Love the sound of the new role but don’t really want a huge pay cut (as well as a commute).

You should definitely be able to argue to keep your salary, as long as it’s within the new HEO payband, which it is (civil servant here too).

I Thought at first you'd added on shift allowance etc but you've confirmed not. I don't think they'll put you on the bottom of the payband. However I think mark time only applies within the same pay and/grade. So definitely worth the discussion with the vacancy holder/HR. Good luck

Promotion pay is your current pay plus 10%. So you should be placed on the new salary maxima and the 10% extra would be paid as a non consolidated lump sum and eroded by the annual pay deal rises. Special allowances are not usually honoured.

All this info should have been on the job ad in the t&c bit, usually attached as a separate file.

@Isleepinahedgefund I’m thinking the problem is that what the OP currently earns is more than others on that step in the grade, as the OP had retained a higher salary from the past and is marking time on it as others haven’t yet caught up. So If you put 10% onto that it will mean the OP may get a strange figure that doesn’t tally with any of the pay steps in the band. Hence I’m thinking the minimum of the HEO grade is what the OP will likely go onto? However the new HR may have some leeway in salary if they are an agency or something on slightly better terms, so they are the ones to ask. I’d say it’s better to be on the mum HEO than the max EO though as there are incremental steps so the salary will rise over time. And you will get recognition for your contribution. Either that or stay as you are and get the job jegged. But I’d move!

Unfortunately there wasn’t an attachment to explain it. I think the promotion pay plus 10% is a HMRC thing but hope it’s not as that would make my decision so much easier!

Thanks @allli that’s sort of the position I’m in. Without giving too much away about my current role it’s much higher paid at EO level than other departments. There was a recent pay review that skewed the salary- it would have made sense to regrade the role too as it would have fit into the civil service better. I’m nowhere near the band maximum but don’t want to get stuck in a rut, which I already feel starting to happen. Hopefully there’ll be some negotiating to be had with HR as I really want it!
